Reflection
David’s story teaches us that God often prepares us for our assignment in places that seem insignificant.
Before David ever stood before Goliath, he stood in a field watching sheep.
Before thousands of people knew his name, David lived through seasons where almost nobody was watching.
He worshipped God there.
He protected sheep there.
He fought a lion there.
He fought a bear there.
And while it may have looked like David was simply doing the ordinary work of a shepherd, God was preparing a king.
When Goliath eventually appeared, David already had a history with God.
He could look at the giant and remember:
“God delivered me before. He will deliver me again.”
The lion and the bear were not wasted battles. They were preparation.
Sometimes we become frustrated with our present season because we cannot see how it connects to where we believe God is taking us.
You may feel overlooked.
You may feel like your gifts are not being fully used.
You may wonder why you are dealing with certain responsibilities, challenges, difficult people, delays or pressures.
But what if this season is training you?
What if God is developing your character before increasing your influence?
What if the problem you are learning to overcome today is preparing you for a greater problem you will be called to solve tomorrow?
David did not suddenly become courageous when he saw Goliath.
Courage had already been developed in him when nobody was watching.
This is why we should never despise seasons of preparation.
Your prayer life is preparing you.
Your work is preparing you.
Your responsibilities are preparing you.
Even some of the battles you would rather avoid may be developing something in you that your future assignment will require.
So do not rush through the field trying to get to the palace.
Be faithful where you are.
Learn what God is teaching you.
Build your relationship with Him.
Develop your gifts.
Allow Him to shape your character.
Because when your Goliath eventually appears, you may discover that God has been preparing you for that moment all along.

Prayer
Father, help me not to despise my present season. Give me the wisdom to recognize what
You are developing in me. Use every responsibility, challenge, victory and even
disappointment to prepare me for Your purpose. Teach me to be faithful when nobody is
watching, and give me confidence that what You are building in me today will prepare me
for where You are taking me tomorrow. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Key Thought
The sheep field may look insignificant, but God could be using it to prepare you for your Goliath.

What is God developing in me through my present season that I may need for my future assignment?
