The Word of God Through Scriptures

Devotional Series: Hearing God

Series Focus: Becoming Listeners and Doers of the Word

Anchor Thought

God still speaks to His people, and one of the clearest ways He speaks is through His Word. A believer must not only hear God’s voice but also obey His instruction. Hearing gives direction, but obedience brings alignment.

Scripture

James 1:22
“Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says.”

Devotional Thought

One of the most important ways God speaks to His people is through Scripture.

Many people want to hear the voice of God, but they neglect the written Word of God. Yet the Scriptures reveal God’s heart, His character, His will, His promises, His warnings, His instructions, and His ways.

Jesus said in John 10:27, “My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me.” This shows us that hearing God is not just about receiving information. Hearing God must lead to following God.

A true sheep does not only hear the Shepherd’s voice; the sheep follows.

James also warns us not to merely listen to the Word while refusing to do what it says. When we hear the Word but do not obey, we can deceive ourselves. We may feel spiritual because we listened, but transformation comes when we obey.

The Word of God is not just for inspiration. It is for instruction.

It teaches us how to live.
It corrects our wrong thinking.
It exposes what is hidden in the heart.
It gives wisdom for decisions.
It strengthens faith.
It reveals Jesus.
It trains us to walk in righteousness.

In the Dominion Series, we learned that dominion is not independence from God; dominion is partnership with God. If we are going to walk in partnership with God, we must become people of the Word.

We cannot represent God accurately if we do not know His Word.

We cannot walk in authority if we reject His instruction.

We cannot carry dominion while ignoring the voice of the King.

The Scriptures are one of the safest foundations for hearing God. Dreams, impressions, prophecies, and inner promptings must all be tested by the Word. God will not lead us in a way that contradicts His character or His written Word.

This is why Scripture must become our daily guide.

Psalm 119:105 says God’s Word is a lamp to our feet and a light to our path. That means the Word gives direction for the next step and light for the journey ahead.

When we open the Scriptures, we are not just reading ancient words. We are positioning our hearts to hear the living God.

Key Truth

God speaks through His Word, and those who truly hear Him must obey what He says.

Reflection Questions

  1. Do I go to Scripture expecting God to speak to me?
  2. Am I only hearing the Word, or am I practicing what God is showing me?
  3. Is there an instruction from Scripture that I already know but have delayed obeying?
  4. Do I test what I hear, feel, or sense by the Word of God?
  5. What area of my life needs the light of God’s Word right now?

Action Step

Choose one scripture from today’s study text. Read it slowly, write it down, and ask:

“Lord, what are You showing me through this scripture, and what step of obedience do You want me to take?”

Then take one practical step today.

Prayer.

Father, thank You for speaking through Your Word. Give me hunger for Scripture and

humility to obey what You reveal. Deliver me from being a hearer only. Make me a doer of

Your Word. Let Your Word become a lamp to my feet and a light to my path. Teach me to

hear You clearly and follow You faithfully. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Declaration

I hear God through His Word. I do not only listen; I obey. The Word of God gives light to my path, and I walk in alignment with His truth.
